Canon Theatre- Canada
The Canon Theatre in Toronto, Canada is a long lived remnant of entertainment history that continues to thrive. Originally opened in 1920 in the heyday of vaudeville and used for both live performances and as a movie house. At the time of it’s opening, the Canon Theatre seating chart was the largest in Canada with seating for over 3,000 people. Operating under the Pantages name, Canon Theatre drew large crowds and featured the latest in vaudeville and first run cinema.
Events conspired against the Pantages though, and in the late 20’s it was bought by RKO and renamed The Imperial where it began a long stretch of showing only movies and eliminated live performance. After some legal wrangles in the 80’s the cinema was once again returned to a live performance venue on a smaller scale. The current Canon Theatre seating chart holds 2,295.
The return of live entertainment at the Canon Theatre coincided with a renewed interest in theatre and today the Canon Theatre is a staple of the arts in Toronto. After a decade long run of Phantom of the Opera, the Canon Theatre is still going strong and booking new performances to keep theatre lovers in Toronto happy.
