Uptown Theater

Seating in the Uptown Theater in Kansas City is one of those special things you’ll always remember. This beautiful venue was designed by John Ebersen to re-create the feel of an open air Mediterranean nighttime. Overhead was a sky full of stars, birds in flight, and even moving clouds. In the late 30’s, patrons in the seats of the Uptown Theater were even treated to the newest in special effects, the ‘Fragratone” in which smell was introduced to the theater experience. The Uptown Theater was unique and different and crowds flocked to the seats to see every first run show to hit the theater. As Hollywood entered the glory years, fans were treated to premiere events featuring major movie stars.

When the allure of Hollywood faded to the suburbs the Uptown Theater survived with live performances of Opera and gained popularity as a dinner playhouse and later as a concert venue. It was saved from destruction by being placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1979, but it wasn’t until 1994 that a complete restoration was finished.

Now seating in the Uptown Theater is as grand as it ever was and patrons enjoy an eclectic selection of shows. Concerts are a mainstay and seating in the Uptown Theater can give you laughs with a comedian, heavy metal with Alice in Chains, or the latest sounds from Fall Out Boy. This is one venue that just seems to keep dishing it out.
