Events at Fisher Theater (view all)
The Fisher Theater first began seating patrons in 1928. True to the style of the 20’s the theater itself was highly decorated, boasting a South American motif of bananas and exotic birds, and even a goldfish pond. Filling the seats with vaudeville acts and the first run Hollywood productions of the era, the Fisher Theater thrived as a part of the Detroit social scene, enjoyed by patrons from all walks of life. As the years advanced, and particularly after WW II, the Fisher Theater began the struggles all post-vaudeville theaters experienced, watching the seats empty as movie goers flocked to the theaters in the suburbs.
But the Fisher Theater was saved from the fate of so many other theaters by it’s conversion to a live performance venue. While other facilities were looking to increase seating capacity to make more money, the Fisher Theater seating chart was trimmed from 3,500 to a little over 2,000, strictly to enhance the theater experience for its customers. The experiment worked. For over 40 years the Fisher Theater has been filling those 2,000 seats with a strong run pf top end Broadway productions filled with stars like Carol Channing and Lynn Redgrave. From Fiddler on the Roof to Hello Dolly to Sweet Charity, the Fisher Theater is alive and well and still keeps its audiences enthralled to this day.
