Seating in the Winnipeg Arena played a major part in the entertainment life of Winnipeg, Manitoba for several decades. This arena, built in 1955, got a fair amount of attention by being located right across the street from Canad Inns Stadium, the home of the CFL’s Blue Bombers. In other words, if you had seats to a sporting event in Winnipeg you were headed straight to Maroons Rd.
In Winnipeg, the two major sports are Canadian Football and of course, Ice Hockey. While Winnipeg hasn’t yet been fortunate enough to land and keep a major NHL team, they’ve thoroughly enjoyed hockey tickets in the Winnipeg Arena. Like Americans enjoying minor league baseball in their home town, Winnipeg’s citizens flocked to the arena to catch the Winnipeg Warriors of the Western Hockey League and the Winnipeg Jets of the WHA. The Jets, at one time a member of the NHL, eventually headed for Phoenix, leaving a void in the seats of Winnipeg Arena. That void was filled in 1996 by the Manitoba Moose until 2004. Along the way the Winnipeg Arena has also been the home of the Winnipeg Monarchs, another minor league team in hockey crazed Canada.
Besides, its use as a hockey venue, the Winnipeg Arena has been used for WWF events, movies scenes, and sparked the “Winnipeg White Out”, where fans crowded into the seating of the Winnipeg Arena dressed all in white to show support for the Winnipeg Jets. Demolished in 2006, the Winnipeg Arena has been replaced by the MTS Centre for most events.
