Opened in 1927 the Seanger Theater has withstood the test of time. Over the years many a stirring performance has been witnessed from the seating of the Saenger. This historic venue, located in the heart of New Orleans just off Canal St., was for decades the heart of the New Orleans performing arts world. Like most of its contemporaries, the Saenger was built with a sweeping vision of luxury, constructed to make visitors forget that the outside world existed, and envelop them in a world of theatrical beauty.
There are few souls in New Orleans that haven’t some memory of a great performance seen from the luxury seats of the Saenger. In the 20’s it was vaudeville and Hollywood. In the 50’s and 60’s it was the place to catch the latest Broadway hit. As the 1970’s unfolded the Saenger added concerts to its event schedule, but musicals the caliber of Grease were still popular, along with performances by a new wave of artists like Richard Pryor. But the Saenger never let go of its theatrical bent and until the day Hurricane Katrina blew into town was still hosting popular live performances.
The Saenger, ravaged by Katrina, will be back. Plans are in the making even as you read this. And it will be back stronger than ever. After all, this is the Big Easy, and when the people of New Orleans think entertainment, they think seats in the Saenger Theater. When will it happen? 2007 is going to be the start of the new life of the Saenger Theater. Sign up for our Saenger Theater newsletter and we’ll put you back in the seats of the Saenger for the latest chapter in the life of this historic theater.
