Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas, and the annual Sun Bowl football game both have long and interesting histories. Sun Bowl Stadium, nestled against a beautiful mountainous backdrop, was built in 1963 as the home of the Sun Bowl game, which dates back to 1935. That first game, played as a fundraiser at the El Paso High School Stadium, attracted a crowd of 3,000 to watch a team of all-stars from El Paso high schools take on Ranger High School.
The following year, college players took part in the Sun Bowl and the game between Hardin-Simmons College and New Mexico A&M ended in a 14-14 tie. The Sun Bowl was later held at the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy before moving to its present location at Sun Bowl Stadium, which originally held 30,000 fans and now can seat 50,426. The long history of the Sun Bowl game has produced some strange results, like a 0-0 tie between Catholic and Arizona State in 1940 and the “Fog Bowl” of 1974 when frost on the field turned to steam as Mississippi State beat North Carolina.
Sun Bowl tickets are always a hot item in El Paso when the Big 10 battles the PAC 10. Teams like Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, UCLA, Iowa and Arizona State have competed in recent Sun Bowl games, which have drawn large crowds. The Sun Bowl is the nation’s second-oldest bowl game and boasts an impressive list of past competitors including Tony Dorsett and Thurman Thomas.
