TEXAS RANGERS: Ameriquest Field

Ameriquest Field came along at the same time retro ballparks were springing up across the major leagues, but for some reason it doesn’t usually get thrown in the group with the Baltimore Orioles’ Oriole Park, the San Francisco Giants’ SBC Park, or even the Colorado Rockies’ Coors Field.

It probably should be. The architects (David M. Schwarz Architectural Services in Washington, D.C.) purposely incorporated numerous elements of parks of yesteryear. The numerous nooks and crannies in the outfield are a nod to Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field and the covered porch with pillars in right field is a throwback to Detroit’s Tiger Stadium.

But don’t worry about your Rangers tickets being obstructed view. As befits a stadium in everything-is-bigger-there Texas, Ameriquest Field takes up a staggering 1.4 million square feet, one of the largest footprints in the major leagues. The design looks strikingly similar to many of the downtown ballparks that have popped up recently. Of course, most of those feature open outfields with views of a downtown skyline. Since Ameriquest Field is in the suburb of Arlington, there was no outfield view available.

So the Rangers created one. Rather than opening up the outfield, they built a four-story office building in center field. Team offices occupy the top floor, the middle two floors are leased to area businesses, and the bottom floor is devoted to souvenirs and Rangers ticket sales. It’s a unique solution to the problem of not having anything to build around.

The office building is the centerpiece of a variety of activities in center field. There’s a baseball museum, a kids play area that includes a wiffle-ball diamond, and the usual speed pitch/batting cage combinations. Perhaps the most crucial addition to the center field play area? The picnic location includes water misters, which come in handy on those 100-degree plus Texas days.

Although the exterior is massive, the interior somehow retained some of the old Arlington Stadium intimate feel. The former home of the Rangers, Arlington Stadium felt much like the minor league park it used to be. While Ameriquest Field is decidedly major league, the seating areas and field level feel small enough to be manageable. Foul ground is minimal and the park has earned a reputation as a homer haven.

Thrill of victory: There’s been no need to print World Series Tickets for Ameriquest Field just yet. But the stadium did host the All-Star Game in 1995 (back when it was still known as the Ballpark at Arlington). It turned out to be one of the most unique games in All-Star history. The National League managed just three hits, but all three of them were home runs and the National Leaguers earned a 3-2 victory.

Agony of defeat: 1999 marked the third time in four years that the Texas Rangers made an appearance in the American League Championship Series. Unfortunately, they had just one victory to show for those three appearances, and it didn’t come in 1999, as the New York Yankees swept the Rangers out of the playoffs.

Rangers Ticket Tips: Rangers tickets, like the exterior of Ameriquest Field, have price tags that are somewhat sizable. You can’t work your way into a seat between the bases for less than $44, and even Club Level Infield seats run $58 apiece. But there’s also some good news: Ameriquest Field features three different sections with prices below $5 on game day: Upper Reserved, Bleachers, and Grandstand Reserved. The Rangers don’t really have any natural geographic rivals in the American League, but the interleague series against the Houston Astros causes some friendly Texan rivalry.
