In 2006 the Golden Hurricanes kept fans leaping out of their seats by posting a 5-3 record in Conference USA and advancing to the Armed Forces Bowl. Tulsa put up home wins against Stephen F. Austin, Southern Miss, UTEP, and Tulane, while suffering a narrow loss against Rice.
Skelly Stadium is planted firmly on the famous Route 66 in Tulsa, and was erected in 1930. Over the years it has been expanded in steps and now carries a seating chart that can pack over 35,000 Golden Hurricanes fans into the seats. Steve Largent caught passes for the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes and the USFL’s Oklahoma Outlaws, with Doug Williams at the helm, also played in Skelly Stadium.
As Conference USA grows in stature the games at Skelly Stadium will only get bigger. The Golden Hurricanes are now firmly established as one the conference’s top teams and playing in the post-season looks like a good bet for the next few years.
