The State Theater in Cleveland is one of a group of classical theaters lining Euclid Avenue between E. 14th and E. 17th streets. The area that became to be known as “Playhouse Square” which entailed the State Theater along with its companions showed silent movies, vaudeville and theater acts. During the depression however the demand for more inexpensive entertainment grew as movies began to dominate the stages along Playhouse Square.
The decade of the 1950’s saw the beginning of urban flight out of the cities and the new medium of television arise. The change in the demographic make-ups of many large American cities began to change rapidly. During the late 1960’s the State Theater along with most of its contemporaries all closed within a 14 month span.
As the 1970’s introduced themselves to the Metropolitan Cleveland area another wind of change took the city by hold. Seeing the historical and sentimental value of restoring the masterpiece theaters along Euclid Avenue, a non-profit entity known as The Playhouse Square group was formed. The classical Theaters including the State Theater were saved from the demolition ball and preceded to go through phases of renovation over the next twenty-five years to where they sit now in their same locations on Euclid Avenue shining with their original grandeur once again.
