Cleveland’s first stab at building a great home field wasn’t an unqualified success. The designers solved one of the old stadium’s biggest problems by fitting the lower bowl snugly around the field. The first row of seats in Municipal Stadium had been 144 feet from the 50-yard line; in Cleveland Browns Stadium, those same seats are only 65 feet away. In addition, the designers provided views of the skyline and the lake, as well as a restaurant and a Browns Hall of Fame. The Dawg Pound was preserved by placing 10,000 bleacher seats near the east end zone. It’s a remarkable achievement, and it has been embraced as another step in downtown Cleveland’s renaissance, following on the heels of Jacobs Field, Gund Arena and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Browns are trying to regain their footing in the highly competitive AFC North. They made a big change in the off-season by hiring former New England defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel as their head coach. Their new era begins Sept. 11 with a home game against Cincinnati.
