Sitting on the site of the old Erie Canal, Utica Memorial Auditorium was built in 1959 and served as a model for the much bigger Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The arena is home to Utica College hockey, and was the site of many of the hockey scenes from the movie Slapshot starring Paul Newman. The venue also hosts concerts and special events, and past performers include The Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen and ZZ Top.
