Just about every Broadway theater in New York City can claim to be historic in one sense or another, but only the New Amsterdam and Lyceum Theatres can claim to be the oldest still in operation. Both were built in 1903, and since then the New Amsterdam has had an interesting history. It flourished during its early years, but then like many other theaters ran into some trouble during the Great Depression and was turned into a movie theater.
Its Broadway history was almost forgotten until the Disney Company purchased the venue in 1993 and poured millions of dollars into a renovation and restoration project. The grand theater re-opened in 1997 and served as the home of The Lion King, which became one of the biggest hits on Broadway in recent memory.
