Events at Lyceum Theatre (view all)
Broadway’s oldest continuously operating legitimate theater is the Lyceum Theater, which opened in 1903. Built under the watch of producer Daniel Frohman, the theater still bears an intriguing feature from his time. His apartment above the theater, which is now the Shubert Archive, contains a peephole so he could watch the actors below.
Now playing at the Lyceum Theater is a revival of Steel Magnolias, the smash Off-Broadway hit that was turned into a popular movie starring Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Sally Field and Julia Roberts. Telling the story of a small-town beauty parlor in the South, Steel Magnolias stars Delta Burke (from “Designing Women”), Christine Ebersole and Rebecca Gayheart, and it is directed by the Tony Award nominated Jason Moore. The show opened in March to rave reviews. The USA Today said “The new revival, which opened at the Lyceum Theatre, makes it easy to see why Robert Harling’s original play drew Hollywood’s attention.” The original play opened Off-Broadway in 1987 and ran for a remarkable 1,126 performances.
