Named for Helen Hayes, the “First Lady of American Theatre” who received the first Tony Award for Best Actress, this theater was built in 1912 as the Little Theater and not long thereafter was renovated and expanded. It was sold in 1931 to the New York Times and renamed Times Hall. It was used as a conference center then later a radio and TV studio before again returning to its roots as a Broadway show theater in the 1980s.
Running through September 4, 2005, at the Helen Hayes Theatre is Jackie Mason - Freshly Squeezed. Among the topics Jackie tackles are same-sex marriages, stock market fraud, celebrities on trial, the epidemic of new diets and politics. You won’t want to miss this show.
