KANSAS CITY ROYALS: Kauffman Stadium

Although Kauffman Stadium opened back in 1973, it is still considered by many as one of the most beautiful parks in all of baseball.

Kauffman Stadium of the Kansas City Royals has had some difficulty attracting fans over the last few seasons, mostly due to the fact that the team has failed to put a winner on the field for quite some time. A series of renovations from ‘07-‘10 help enhance “The K” by reducing capacity, adding a new scoreboard, outfield concourse, and much more. With one of the youngest rosters in Major League Baseball the Royals are looking to turn things around and return to their glory years of the 80’s.

Kauffman Stadium’s new HD scoreboard was one of the first changes made in a series of renovations. It replaced an aging scoreboard that nearly two decades old. When it debuted in ‘08 it was the largest HD LED scoreboard in the world. It also features a crown at the top which is synonymous with the Kansas City Royals.

In the early years of Kauffman Stadium Royals fans were treated to some great baseball. In 1980 the Royals hosted their first World Series although they fell to the Philadelphia Phillies in seven games. The Royals returned to the Fall Classic in 1985 and would eventually go on to defeat their cross-state rivals the St. Louis Cardinals in six games. Kauffman Stadium also hosted the ‘12 MLB All-Star Game.

Thrill of victory: Oct. 27, 1985: The Kansas City Royals clinched their first World Series title in franchise history after they defeated their rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals 11-0 in Game 7. Hall of Famer George Brett had four hits and pitcher Bret Saberhagen had a masterful performance in the decisive game. This marked the first time in Major League history that a team lost the first two games of the World Series and went on to win.

Agony of defeat: Oct. 19, 1980: The Royals led the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 3-2 entering the 9th innning of Game 5 of the 1980 World Series. Philadelphia’s Manny Trillo drove in the go ahead run in the top of the 9th off of the legendary Dan Quisenberry to give the Phils the lead. The Royals loaded the bases in the bottom half of the 9th but were unable to score when Tug McGraw struck out Jose Cardenal to end the game, giving the Phillies the series lead 3-2, a lead that they would never relinquish.

Royals Ticket Tips: The Royals often have plenty of promotions throughout the season so be on the look out for those when purchasing tickets to see them play. Some of the most popular promos include “Buck Night” which hot dogs, peanuts, and sodas are all $1 and the Negro League Game when fans receive hats upon entry to the game. Like most stadiums the best seats at Kauffman Stadium are located directly behind home plate or down either baseline. Seats at Kauffman Stadium are generally among the cheapest in baseball so you might find yourself a great deal if you’re looking to catch a game in Kansas City.
