Detroit would hardly seem to be the preferred location for a Super Bowl. After all, the National Football League’s premier event isn’t just about crowning a champion; it’s about showing the high-rollers a good time. It’s about palm trees and sultry tropical breezes and making sure everyone’s glass is full. In most years, that job falls to a tourist-savvy Southern city like Miami, Tampa or New Orleans. Detroit? Sure it has its charms, but it doesn’t boast margarita weather in February. So why bring the NFL’s toughest ticket to such a place?
Because of Ford Field. Step inside the Detroit Lions’ palatial three-year-old home and concerns about the league’s decision to play Super Bowl XL a stone’s throw from the Canadian border instantly melt away. As an international audience will discover Feb. 5 when the title is decided, this is a superb football facility.
Ford Field was unveiled in 2002 and quickly established itself as one of the NFL’s most fan-friendly venues. Located in the heart of Detroit’s downtown entertainment district, this state-of-the-art indoor facility meshes perfectly with its surroundings. Indeed, it envelops one of Detroit landmarks, with much of the venue’s luxury boxes, press seating and food options contained within Hudson’s Warehouse. Touches like that help explain why Lions tickets are so hard to find.
For the first time in several years, Detroit fans are having to worry about where they might find playoff tickets. The team’s skill positions are stocked with talented young players such as receivers Roy Williams and Charles Rogers and running back Kevin Jones. Fourth-year quarterback Joey Harrington will have to show signs of progress, but even if he doesn’t, there’s a contingency plan in place with veteran Jeff Garcia signing in the off-season. The 2005 schedule includes home games against the likes of Green Bay (Sept. 11), Baltimore (Oct. 9), Atlanta (Nov. 24) and Minnesota (Dec. 4). Get your Detroit Lions tickets at Gotickets.
Ford Field isn’t just home to the Lions. It is also the site of the Motor City Bowl, which pits the Mid-American Conference champion against a team from the Big East. This year’s game is set for Dec. 26. Ford Field tickets are available through Gotickets.
In addition, Ford Field has plays host to banquets, concerts, corporate meetings and even a marathon. The Rolling Stones have played there. In fact, the legendary band was the first big-ticket act to be booked into the stadium, playing there in October 2002. The following year, Eminem returned to his hometown for two shows and ended up playing to 100,000 people.
The big attraction, of course, is the NFL. Gotickets will put you right in the middle of all the Ford Field action.
