Crisler Arena

The “House that Cazzie built” blasts exuberance once the University of Michigan Wolverines takes court. After tip off all 13,751 seats erupt in spontaneous madness. One could hear the rumble protruding through the walls in the parking lot. Constructed in 1967 and named after great Wolverine head football coach and later athletic director, Herbert O. “Fritz” Crisler; many great Wolverine basketball games have occurred here. “The house that Cazzie built” comes from legendary Wolverine basketball player Cazzie Russell. Cazzie helped the Michigan Wolverines win three straight Big Ten Conference titles from 1964 to 1966.

Some speculate that the popularity of Cazzie and growing fan base of Wolverine basketball in general caused the outgrowing of Yost Field house. Needing more seating Crisler Arena was born to the overwhelming delight of the fans. The arena sold out every seat for the 1980-1982 Mid-American Conference men’s basketball tournament despite being in the Big Ten Conference. Crisler Arena, with its excellent seating, is a purebred basketball arena. Women’s gymnastics continue to hold their bigger meets here. Back in the early 1980’s Crisler Arena became famous for something other than basketball however. Bruce Springsteen and the E street band sold every seat in the house, then absent mindedly forgot the words to his hit “Born to Run.”.
