The State Theater in Portland, Maine was exactly what you’d think of a theater built in 1929. Comfortable seating, and we mean really comfortable seating, plush is probably a better word. The walls are highly decorated and overhead, the ceiling is a sculptured treasure. They knew how to build a theatre in those day and taking your seat in a gem like this must have been a pleasure.
When the State Theater was being designed, the owners employed the services of Herbert W. Rhodes, one of the more prominent Portland architects of the time. Moviegoers of the time expected to be enveloped in luxury surroundings as they spent their hard earned money on entertainment. And entertainmemnt they got. From the seats of the State Theater patrons enjoyed the latest movies, vaudeville acts, stage shows, and musical productions.
Nowadays of course, the State Theatre in Portland is dedicated mostly to concerts and the occasional live production. It’s a favorite with Portland Music lovers looking to check out their favorite artists or that up and coming new act they’ve been hearing so much about.
