US Airways Arena
Seating in the US Airways Arena may be gone but the memories of the place will remain around for awhile. Built in 1973, the seating chart for basketball held 18,756. And they were a wild crowd, enjoying the games of the Washington Bullets for over ten years and for college basketball fans, the Georgetown Hoyas were plenty enough reason to fill the seats of the US Airways Arena. This venue also maxed out its seating capacity with NCAA Mens Basketball Tournaments for three years, and an NBA All-Star Game.
Along with the Bullets and the Hoyas, the US Airways Arena played host to the NHL, housing the Washington Capitals from 1974 to 1997. Seating for hockey was a little over 18,000. As a sports haven, this venue also acted as home base for Arena Football, lacrosse, and the Washington Warthogs pro soccer team. Quite a resume for an indoor arena.
Also known as the Capital Centre, seats in US Airways Arena are remembered fondly by Washington sports fans. It featured the first video screen in an indoor arena for the fans enjoyment and also launched the career of notorious fan Robin Ficker, who became known as the most loved and hated NBA fan in the country by settling down behind the Bullets opposing bench, and creating a barrage of verbal abuse that many believed got into the heads of the visiting team. Goodbye Robin and goodbye seats in the US Airways Arena. We’re gonna miss you.
