M&T Bank Stadium 1101 Russell Street Baltimore, MD 21230 Capacity: 68,915

Baltimore knew it had a good thing going after its new baseball stadium, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, opened to rave reviews in 1992. So the city tapped many of the same architects who worked on that influential stadium to design its National Football League counterpart. The result was another stunner. M&T Bank Stadium was a success from the start after making its debut in 1998 with a game between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

M&T Bank Stadium sits alongside the Orioles’ home in Baltimore’s visitor-friendly inner harbor. The architects at HOK Sport in Kansas City strived to echo many of the design themes that made Camden Yards such a hit with fans while giving the new stadium its own identity. They accomplished their goal by ordering more than 1 million bricks, which were laid by hand in hopes of blending the stadium’s façade into the surrounding neighborhood. Bedecked in brick and reinforced concrete, with glass surfaces and a web of exposed steel adding texture and detail, the stadium looks impressively modern and reassuringly old-fashioned at the same time. With sports fans and tourists now flocking to the city’s revitalized heart, it may be the best $220 million Baltimore ever spent. You can see the venue for yourself by ordering your M&T Bank Stadium tickets at Gotickets.

M&T Bank Stadium has endured an identity crisis since opening. It was known as PSINet Stadium in its first four seasons, then became Baltimore Ravens Stadium in 2002 before M&T Bank signed a 15-year naming-rights agreement the following year worth $75 million.

No matter what you prefer to call their home, the Ravens should be well worth watching in 2005. Their Ray Lewis-led defense will be as tough as ever, and they addressed a glaring weakness by signing blue-chip receiver Derrick Mason in the off-season. Fans will find out on opening day just how much the Ravens have improved when they welcome the Indianapolis Colts to M&T Bank Stadium. In addition to their blockbuster opener on Sept. 11, the Ravens will have home games against Pittsburgh (Nov. 20), Green Bay (Dec. 19) and Minnesota (Dec. 25). M&T Bank Stadium has played host to more than just pro football. The Army-Navy game was held there in 2000, and it has been the site of University of Maryland games and NCAA lacrosse games. It has also served as a popular concert venue with Metallica, Korn, Kid Rock and others playing there in 1998. You can get your college football tickets and concert tickets at Gotickets.

M&T Bank Stadium was one of the first to break away from the traditional bowl-shaped design of earlier football venues. The decision to split the upper concourse into four distinct sections had a two-fold benefit. First, it eliminated unpopular corner seats, which typically offer poor views of the field. Second, it gave spectators impressive views of the city from within the stadium. Baltimore fans have responded by coming out in record numbers to cheer on the Ravens. You can join them by purchasing your M&T Bank Stadium tickets and other NFL tickets at Gotickets.
