Events at Wang Center
The Wang Center for the Performing Arts comprises two of Boston’s top venues, the 3,600-seat Wang Theatre and the 1,600-seat Shubert Theatre. Originally opened in 1925 as The Metropolitan Theatre, or simply “The Met,” the Wang Theatre was christened with its new name in 1983 in honor of Dr. An Wang, founder of Wang Laboratories and a major supporter of the performing arts. Nearly $10 million was raised to restore the Wang Theatre and it’s proven to be well worth the money and effort as performers like Whitney Houston and Harry Connick Jr. have graced the stage, tapings of “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!” have been held there, and Broadway shows have packed in capacity crowds. The Wang Theatre features a great lineup of upcoming events like Riverdance, the Boston Ballet’s Cinderella, The Ten Tenors, White Christmas and Dr. Dolittle. The Shubert Theatre presents a variety of performances from Broadway shows to opera to dance. Opened in the early 1900s as the Lyric Theatre and quickly renamed the Shubert, the theater boasts a list of past performers including Al Jolson, Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and Sir Laurence Olivier. In 1996, the Wang Center for the Performing Arts took over the venue from The Shubert Organization and spent $6 million to renovate the theater. Some of the upcoming events at the Shubert include Abyssina, Camelot, The Boy Friend, the Boston Lyric Opera and the Martha Graham Dance Company.
