Events at Welsh Ryan Arena
For more than 50 years, the home of Northwestern Wildcats basketball has been Welsh-Ryan Arena (formerly known as McGaw Memorial Hall). Opened in 1952, McGaw Hall underwent a $6.75 million renovation before the 1983-84 season and the basketball arena was renamed Welsh-Ryan Arena with an expanded capacity of 8,117. The old McGaw Hall hosted the 1956 NCAA Basketball Championship in which San Francisco, led by eventual NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell, defeated Iowa in front of an arena record 10,653 fans who somehow packed the arena far beyond its seating capacity.
