Events at Memorial Stadium-IL
Opened in 1923, Memorial Stadium is the home of University of Illinois Fighting Illini football. Dedicated to the Illinois men and women lost in World War I, the names of those who died serving their country are etched on 200 columns that support the stadium. Although the first game was played at Memorial Stadium in 1923, it wasn’t officially dedicated until 1924, when Illinois pounded Michigan 39-14 in a game that featured six touchdowns and a total of 402 yards by the legendary Harold E. “Red” Grange. Since then, the Illini have won more than 225 games at Memorial Stadium (which also served as the home to the Chicago Bears in 2002 while Soldier Field was being renovated). The Illini are hoping to rebound from a disappointing 2004 season and new head coach Ron Zook coming from Florida is definitely a step in the right direction. There are more than 25 former Illini players in the NFL, including Ken Dilger and Simeon Rice, so attracting talent to Champaign has never been a problem. The 2005 home schedule for the Illini kicks off with non-conference games against Rutgers and San Jose State before Big 10 games against Michigan State, Penn State, Wisconsin and Northwestern.
