Although the Goodman Theater is a relatively new facility, having opened in 2000, its history goes back more than 75 years to the original Goodman Theatre. Opened in 1925, that first venue was a theatrical success - it won a 1992 Tony Award as Outstanding Regional Theater and has featured stars like James Earl Jones, Brian Dennehy and Karl Malden - but the acoustics were terrible and the heating/air conditioning systems had to be turned off during performances because they were so loud. So a new Goodman Theatre was erected in 2000 and dedicated exactly 75 years after its predecessor was.
