Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre is one of the city’s oldest venues - it opened in 1889, just 10 years after Thomas Edison gave the first public demonstration of the light bulb. Legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who was just a young draftsman when he worked on the Auditorium Theatre project, later called it “the greatest room for music and opera in the world - bar none.” The Republic National Convention was held at Auditorium Theatre in 1888 (even though it wasn’t complete), and Benjamin Harrison received the party’s nomination. Harrison returned a year later as President to dedicate the completed theater. Operated jointly by Broadway in Chicago and Roosevelt University, Auditorium Theatre features a variety of Broadway shows as well as dance, music and other performing arts. Teddy Roosevelt also launched a successful Presidential campaign after being nominated at Auditorium Theatre, but the venue closed during the Great Depression and sat mostly vacant for many years until it was restored and reopened in the 1960s. It turned into one of Chicago’s most successful concert halls and featured the likes of Jimi Hendrix, The Who and The Grateful Dead before undergoing another restoration and becoming a performing arts venue again. Coming up at the Auditorium Theatre is the classic Broadway hit Cats, the Joffrey Ballet, Movin’ Out with the music of Billy Joel, and Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake.
