Events at East Lake Golf Club
East Lake Golf Club began as a part of the Atlanta Athletic Club before the AAC moved to its present location in Duluth. It provided a home to golfing legend Bobby Jones who served as one time president of the club, as well as home to John Heisman, of Heisman trophy fame. The golf course itself was not added to the club until 1908, and a second course was added in 1930. However, in the 1960’s the area around the East Lake Golf Club began to deteriorate, and the Atlanta Athletic Club moved away, selling off their courses, the second of the two to a developer who turned it into residential areas. As the surrounding areas continued to decline, so too did the East Lake Golf Club until, in 1993, it was purchased and restored to its original splendor in honor of Bobby Jones and the other great amateurs that once roamed the fairways. Today, all contributions to the East Lake Golf Club are used to help the continued revitalization of the surrounding East Lake area.
Some of the PGA’s biggest and brightest stars have tested their wits and skills against the historic East Lake course. Most notable of these tournaments have been the 1950 U.S. Women’s Amateur, 1963 Ryder Cup Matches, ‘01 U.S. Amateur, and the ‘98, 2000 and ‘02 PGA Tour Championships. Winners of these events have included Hal Sutton, Phil Mickleson, and Vijay Singh.
