Built in 1967, the arena has hosted countless sports events including several of historical significance. In 1973, Ken Norton upset Muhammad Ali to take the heavyweight title, and in both 1979 and 1981, Irish runner Aemonn Coghlin set the world record for the fastest indoor mile. His 1981 record still stands. Some of the past concerts at the arena include Elvis Presley, Aerosmith, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Pearl Jam and the Rolling Stones. Upcoming events include an NBA preseason game with Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers taking on the Charlotte Bobcats, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and System of a Down.
