In the first franchise move since the Hartford Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes in ‘97, the Atlanta Thrashers took to the skies and became the Winnipeg Jets just before last season. The move was perhaps the biggest story in the NHL of the entire season, and it was seen as a success as the return to Winnipeg of professional hockey was met with a huge amount of enthusiasm by local fans, who consistently filled MTS Centre.

The move proved difficult for the newly renamed Jets, who played a decent, but losing season, coming in with 84 points, tied for third in the Southeast Division with the Tampa Bay Lightning. However, this was only eight points out of the playoffs, and the Winnipeg Jets schedule saw some major wins against the NHL’s mightiest, such as a February 17 4-2 victory over defending champions the Boston Bruins, a 1-0 shutout of the future champion Los Angeles Kings and a wild early season 9-8 victory over the Flyers in Philadelphia that had the media going crazy over the Jets. Six players on the Winnipeg Jets roster posted seasons of 45+ points, including Blake Wheeler’s 17 goals and 47 assists in his first full season with the team. The Jets make some of the biggest moves in the entire league in terms of acquisitions, picking up a variety of players to bolster their lineup. This included grabbing goalie Al Montoya (who was drafted 6th overall in ‘04) and defenseman Grant Clitsome in the regular season, as well as well-known forwards Alexei Ponikarovsky and Olli Jokinen, who is coming off his best season in recent memory. This is going to be a big season in Manitoba, so get your Winnipeg Jets hockey tickets now.

The Winnipeg Jets fans are an enthusiastic bunch, and in fact, Winnipeg Jets tickets sold out so fast last year, they actually had to shut down the waiting list for tickets after 8,000 fans signed up for it. The Jets are primed for a season of victory in their new home, and if last season’s hugely successful ticket selling campaign, called the “Drive to 13,000,” is any indication, the fans are ready for it too. Get your Winnipeg Jets seats now, and don’t miss their big games against new rivals like the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.
