The 2013 New York Rangers season marked the end of the John Tortorella era. Despite finishing 2nd in the Atlantic Division and 6th in the Eastern Conference, it wasn’t enough for “Torts” to keep his job in the Big Apple. The Rangers were defeated by the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference semi-finals of the 2013 NHL playoffs. Many fans and analysts were surprised to learn that Tortorella was fired because he was so well-liked and thought to be one of the better coaches in the league. But, as with all coaching jobs in New York, there is little room for error. Anything less than a championship is viewed as failure in NYC.

The Rangers looked poised to make another deep run in the 2013 Playoffs but weren’t able to do so. They ran into the red hot Boston Bruins who had just capped off an incredible comeback in the first round against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Although the Rangers finished second in the Atlantic Division they were 16 points behind the dominant Pittsburgh Penguins. There is still plenty of speculation as to who will replace John Tortorella in New York City. Rumors of former Ranger greats Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier to become the next head coach of the Rangers have surfaced since Tortorella was relieved of his duties. With a very talented roster that includes the likes of Rick Nash, Brad Richards, Marc Stall, and Ryan Callahan the Rangers will once again have high expectations.
