The New York Islanders 2013 season was a roller coaster ride. The team seemed destined to miss the playoffs once again but stormed back in their final fifteen games to clinch the 8-seed in the Eastern Conference. The Islanders won 14 of their final 15 affairs, including a streak of 11 straight wins to grab the final spot in the East. Rising star John Tavares led the Islanders in points and goals in 2013 with 47 and 28, respectively. At just 22, Tavares looks to be one of the most promising young talents in the National Hockey League.

Although the Islanders fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, they still have a lot to hang their hats on. Just making the playoffs was a tremendous accomplishment for the Uniondale, New York based franchise. Their incredible run of eleven straight wins down the stretch did not get nearly enough media attention as it should have. The Islanders will have high expectations next season for the first time in quite a while. Their 2013 playoff berth was the first since the ‘06-‘07 campaign and may have given the team new life.

The ‘13-‘14 season will be the final year in Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum for the New York Islanders as they shift to beautiful new Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the ‘15-‘16 season. Fans will have to say goodbye to the venue that has been their home since 1972. There have been plenty of good memorials in Nassau Coliseum, including a run of four straight Stanley Cup championships from 1980 to 1984. Additionally the team won an incredible 19 straight playoff series during that time. This accomplishment has remained unmatched in any other major professional sport. With a bright future and playoff berths certainly on the horizon, Islanders fans certainly have a lot to look forward to. Especially when the team moves to Brooklyn in 2015. The team will have one of the best facilities in the country at their disposal, and while it will be difficult to bid Nassau Coliseum adieu, the Barclays Center will be an incredible upgrade for the Islanders franchise.
