The Brooklyn Nets made headlines when they hired their former point guard as their new head coach. 40-year old Jason Kidd will make his coaching debut this season in Brooklyn. Kidd’s hiring marks the first time since 1990 that a player has retired and become a head coach in the NBA immediately after. With a massive payroll and very high expectations, there will be plenty of pressure on Kidd to deliver another postseason berth to the people of Brooklyn.

The Nets began last season with a lot of hype. They were moving into a new building, the Barclays Center, and experiencing a huge change in the culture of their organization. They rebranded themselves with new look jerseys and color schemes to help create a buzz. It certainly didn’t hurt that hip-hop mogul Jay-Z was at the forefront of bringing the Nets to his hometown. The Nets also had their own television series on NBA TV, which showcased life both on and off the court. Avery Johnson was the man hired to help reshape the Nets, but unfortunately that didn’t go as planned. Johnson was fired on December 27th after losing 10 of 13 games. His replacement, veteran head coach P.J. Carlesimo guided the Nets to a 46-23 record in his brief time at the helm. Their orverall record of 49-33 was good enough for 4th in the Eastern Conference and 2nd in the Atlantic Division. Unfortunately the Nets ran into the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the NBA Playoffs and fell in seven hard fought games. New head coach Jason Kidd will try to lead the Nets back to the the NBA Finals for the first time since 2003.
