Jimmie Johnson led a race high 107 laps at the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400, and brought his #48 Lowes Monte Carlo home for his first win of the year, spoiling what might have been a great homecoming for Las Vegas natives Kyle and Kurt Busch. Johnson didn't lead until lap 147, but he was the class of the field for the final half; rookie Kyle Busch finished second followed by his older brother Kurt in third in what was still an outstanding effort by the brothers.

The event saw new race records set for lead changes (12 leaders for 25 changes), and cautions with ten. Daytona winner Jeff Gordon bounced back from a poor California finish to run fourth, while RCR driver Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five, despite being forced to start at the rear of the pack when NASCAR discovered they had illegally qualified with less than a full tank of fuel. Two-time defending race winner Matt Kenseth ran a strong eighth, with pole winner Ryan Newman ninth (it was Newman's 28th career pole, good for 23rd on the all-time list). The final caution period of the day came out on lap 224 when Hermie Sadler hit the wall. Dale Earnhardt, Jr's woes continued as he finished 42nd after smashing up his car in a four car incident on lap 12 which also involved Bobby Labonte, Brian Vickers and Ricky Rudd.
