The new kids on the ACC block are proven winners. Ten consecutive trips to postseason bowls prove that, and last year’s tough 16-14 loss to Vanderbilt in the Music City Bowl will make for a season with a chip on their shoulder. This could be very scary for the rest of the ACC. Quarterback Codi Boek returns for his junior year to challenge red shirt freshman Justin Tuggle for the starting job. Porter, a 6”-3” 225 lb. junior, is hungry and ready to go. The competition in the backfield should be even better. Sophomore Montel Harris is favored to start but will have a hard time keeping battling sophomore Josh Haden off the field. Both are solid runners, capable of hitting the magic 1,000 yard mark. The wide receiver position is filled by a bevy of veteran talent, with Justin Jarvis and tight end Lars Anderson standing to be a favorite targets for Boek.
Defensive coordinator Gary Tranquill designs his defense around the available talent. Last year Eagles ticket buyers watched one of the nation’s best defenses in terms of scoring totals (18th) and yards per game (6th). In the 2009 college football season, that means the Eagle will be depending on their defensive line and linebackers for a ticket back to postseason play.
Eagles ticket buyers should be happy with the step up in competition that has come with the team’s move to the ACC. Alumni Stadium will feature visits from Florida State (Oct 3), Wake Forest (Sept 26th), and North Carolina State (Oct 17th).
