While many conferences have only added a year-end tournament over the last 10 or 20 years, the Southeastern Conference actually had one was early as ‘33. Of course the conference was a little different back then, as it included Tulane and a small school called Sewanee. The Kentucky Wildcats dominated those early tournaments, perhaps in part due to the fact that the tournament was normally played at the old Louisville Gardens, but then from ‘53 until ‘78 the tournament was not played at all. When it returned in ‘79, it would be six years before the Wildcats would win it as Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama and Georgia all took turns hoisting the trophy.
