With the national championship win by Cam Newton and the Auburn Tigers football team, it’s easy to forget about the Auburn Tigers basketball team. And after the season they had last year, going 4-12 in the SEC and 11-20 overall, it’s hard not to blame people for overlooking the basketball program. But the Tigers have proven over the years that they can’t be held down for long, so it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see some significant improvement this season. Under first year head coach Tony Barbee last season, the Tigers certainly struggled at times, but the Auburn basketball roster should be stronger this season. There is also reason for optimism when you look at what Barbee did at UTEP, where in a span of just a few seasons he went from 14-17 to 26-7 with an NCAA Tournament appearance. Another reason that there is some excitement about the Auburn Tigers basketball schedule this season is the new Auburn Arena. Opened last year to replace the aging Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum, Auburn Arena cost nearly $100 million to build. If you haven’t been to the new arena yet, it’s definitely worth taking a trip to check it out. But the new arena only has a capacity of 9,121, which is a fair amount less than the old Coliseum. There’s really no getting around the fact that the Auburn Tigers did not have a good season last year, but at least they did finish the schedule on a positive note.
