Although former St. John’s coach Norman Roberts was popular with players and many fans, a sixth straight failure to the reach the NCAA Tournament signaled the need for change prior to the ‘10-‘11 season. That change came in the former of new head coach Steve Lavin, and the results were incredible as the Red Storm improved markedly with a 21-12 overall record, a 12-6 record in the competitive Big East, a #18 ranking and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since ‘02. Like any coach taking over a new program, it took Lavin and the team a little while to gel and they had some struggles early on. At the end of January the Red Storm was just 11-8 overall and 4-5 in the conference, so a trip to the NCAA Tournament seemed like a longshot. But then St. John’s took down the #3 ranked Duke Blue Devils at Madison Square Garden. Less than two weeks later they struck again by defeating #9 Connecticut with relative ease, and then #4 Pittsburgh also went down in defeat at MSG. And even though St. Johns lost early in the NCAA Tournament, they proved that they are back as one of the top teams in the Big East. Catch them all season long with St. John’s Red Storm basketball tickets from GoTickets.
The St. John’s basketball schedule is split between their two home venues, Madison Square Garden and the smaller Carnesecca Arena in Queens. Both arenas have their advantages, so make sure you check out at least one game this season at both venues. Coach Lavin will have a challenge on his hands this season to replace all the seniors who have departed the St. John’s basketball roster, but he proved during his time at UCLA that he can recruit with the best of them. This is going to be an exciting year of St. John’s basketball, so get your Red Storm tickets early this season.
Since Lou Carnesecca retired after the ‘92 season the Red Storm program has not been back to the NCAA Final Four, but it appears they now have a coach that can take them back to the Promised Land. Not only is Lavin a great coach, as evidenced by his success at UCLA, but he’s so well-known from his time as an EPSN and ABC commentator that he will surely have an advantage when it comes to recruiting. So now is the time to buy your St. John’s basketball tickets.
