Basketball has been a sporting tradition for the Fighting Illini for more than a century, and they have enjoyed a good deal of success in the sport over the years. Illinois plays in the Big 10 Conference and has won the conference title more than a dozen times, been to the NCAA Elite Eight five times, made it to the NCAA Final Four twice (finished second in ‘05), and were national champions nearly a century ago.

Illinois plays their basketball games at the 16,618-seat Assembly Hall on campus in Champaign, Illinois. Despite the large venue, Fighting Illini basketball tickets can be tough to find, especially good seats. At GoTickets, you can take your pick from a wide range of Illinois basketball tickets in all price levels.

Former Ohio State assistant John Groce joined the program as head coach in March ‘12, replacing Bruce Weber who had been with Illinois since ‘03 (and led them to the NCAAs five times, including losing to North Carolina in the championship game in ‘05). Weber also led the Orange Krush to the Big Ten title for two consecutive years after his hiring, but despite his best efforts the team could manage no better than second place after that.

The Fighting Illini finished 17-15 in ‘11-‘12, and a disappointing 6-12 in Big Ten play. The team actually won the first 12 games of the season (granted against weaker opposition), and then finished the season on a 5-15 slump. They were not invited to play in either the NCAA or the NIT tournament, and the Illinois Fighting Illini schedule this season looks pretty daunting, but the Illinois Fighting Illini roster looks strong as the team gets back all four of their top scorers from last year and has a shot at a decent recruiting class. In his introductory press conference, new head coach Groce emphasized that he plans to be aggressive in his recruiting despite his status as a first-year coach.
