“Sugar” Shane Mosley is one of America’s greatest boxers in history. He is the only fighter to win a title belt in three separate weight classes. He has been called one of the best pound-for-pound fighters ever. He fought his way to the top by fighting the best competition and winning. His nickname “Sugar” has a history that recalls great fighters to mind when the name is said. It wasn’t given to Mosley lightly. He carries the nickname because of his resemblance to “Sugar” Roy Robinson and “Sugar” Ray Leonard. He has great footwork and quick hands.
This American boxing champion has been boxing since he was eight years old in his native home of California. As a young boxer he won the National Amateur Championship three times, and was a member of the 1992 Olympic boxing team. He racked up over 250 wins in his amateur career.
His professional debut was in 1993. It was a bout against a state champion fighter, and he won in a five round blow-out. Despite having a record of 23-0 (22 knockouts), Mosley was not getting the attention he deserved. It was when he fought Phillip Holiday for the IBF Lightweight Championship and won, that he got his dues. Roy Jones Jr. said Mosley was one of the best lightweight fighters in history. Mosley did not disappoint as he knocked out fighter after fighter.
He earned the title “Fighter of the Year” in 1998 after he successfully defended his title five times each in a knockout decision.
In 2000 Mosley decided to make a change from lightweight (135lbs) to Welterweight (147). Mosley was interested in fighting tougher matches. Critics were skeptical, but Mosley proved them wrong when he fought and beat super popular Oscar de la Hoya for the WBC Welterweight title. He is the only boxer in history to have beaten de la Hoya twice. The second match-up was in 2003. It was a bout for two titles – the WBC & WBA Junior Middleweight title.
Mosley had chosen to move up in weight classes again, but this move was not as successful as he would have hoped. He was still great and fought two very close bouts against superstar “Winky” Wright. They were exciting and crowd pleasing. He moved back down in weight class, and in 2005 he won against David Estrada in the spring, and in the fall, won a clear victory against undefeated Jose Luis Cruz.
“Sugar” Shane Mosley is an exciting boxer with a great record under his belt and titles to his name.
