The sponsorship of stadiums in the US is often among the most difficult things to keep up with in sports. CenturyLink Field (previously Seahawks Stadium and Qwest Field) was renamed in 2011 following CenturyLink’s acquisition of Qwest. It seems that the stadium has finally found a name it can keep at least for several more seasons.
Home to the Seattle Seahawks of the NFC West division, CenturyLink Field is considered by many as the most difficult place to play in the entire National Football League. Seattle’s fan base, nicknamed the 12th man, helps create an atmosphere similar to one that you might find on a college campus. The fans are always into the game no matter what the score or the team’s record. The architect of the stadium specifically designed it so that noise would stay in the stadium rather than out.
At a cost of $430 million, CenturyLink Field truly is a modern marvel. It features a terrific view of the beautiful Seattle skyline as well as a seating capacity in excess of 67,000. CenturyLink is also the first NFL stadium to use FieldTurf as its playing surface, which led many other NFL teams to do the same, including the Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, and New York Giants.
In addition to the NFL, CenturyLink Field is also home to many other big events. The University of Washington Huskies have played several games at CenturyLink, including the annual Apple Cup against rival Washington State. The Seattle Sounders of the MLS also call CenturyLink Field home. Much like the Seahawks, the Sounders are considered the most difficult team to beat at home.
In years past, CenturyLink field has also hosted Motocross events and large concert acts. Some of the world’s biggest bands, including The Rolling Stones, U2, and Metallica, have all graced CenturyLink Field with their presence. You can expect many more big concert events to roll through Seattle in upcoming years.
