Baseball has Yankee Stadium, horse racing has Churchill Downs, and college football has the Rose Bowl, one of the most recognizable sports venues in the world. Opened in 1921 with a horseshoe configuration, the Rose Bowl has been expanded many times since then and is now one of the largest stadiums in the U.S. Officially, the capacity of the Rose Bowl is 92,542, but attendance often soars past the 100,000 mark. The Rose Bowl is of course the home of the “The Granddaddy of Them All,” the Rose Bowl Game, which was first played in 1902 (although the second Rose Bowl wasn’t played until 1916).
