It’s hard to believe the San Diego Chargers’ home is the second-oldest continuously occupied venue in the National Football League. Qualcomm Stadium opened in 1967 and is predated only by Green Bay’s seriously old-school Lambeau Field. Yet it looks as fit and ready for action as many of the stadiums that have gone up in the past decade. Must be the weather.
Qualcomm Stadium used to be known as San Diego Stadium and later Jack Murphy Stadium (after a local sportswriter who urged the Chargers’ relocation from Los Angeles to San Diego). It is playing host to Chargers games for the 39th consecutive year. Previously it was home to the San Diego Padres before they moved to the baseball-only Petco Park in 2004. The Chargers, feeling left out of the NFL’s building boom, would like a new home as well, but there appears to be plenty of life left in Qualcomm Stadium, much to the chagrin of team officials. The Chargers appear to have plenty of life left in them, too, if last season’s stunning 12-4 about-face was any indication. Led by quarterback Drew Brees and running back LaDainian Tomlinson, the team improved by eight games over its previous finish. San Diego’s performance gave hope to the long-suffering inhabitants of Qualcomm Stadium, but it left Brees and company with a tough act to follow. Among the more challenging home games on the 2005 schedule are visits by Dallas (Sept. 11), Pittsburgh (Oct. 10), Oakland (Oct. 16) and Denver (Dec. 31). There’s also a game against the New York Giants (Sept. 25) that should be most interesting as Giants quarterback Eli Manning will be facing the team he spurned before the 2004 NFL draft. You can be a part of the welcoming committee by visiting Gotickets for your San Diego Chargers tickets. Gotickets can also provide you with New York Giants tickets, Dallas Cowboys tickets, Pittsburgh Steelers tickets, Oakland Raiders tickets, Denver Broncos tickets, and any other NFL tickets you need.
Qualcomm Stadium is also home to the San Diego State Aztecs. The Mountain West Conference football team opens its 2005 schedule Sept. 3 with a home game against UCLA. You can get your San Diego State tickets, UCLA tickets and other college football tickets at Gotickets.
The highlight of Qualcomm Stadium’s college football lineup is the Holiday Bowl, which pits a Pac-10 representative against an opponent from the Big 12. This year’s game is set for Dec. 29. You can find Holiday Bowl tickets and any other college football tickets you need at Gotickets.
Site of 1988 and 1998 Super Bowls, Qualcomm Stadium is also a popular concert venue. The Rolling Stones and U2 have both played several times. Other visitors include The Who, Pink Floyd and the Eagles. Visit Gotickets for your Rolling Stones tickets, U2 tickets and other concert tickets.
The Chargers are hoping to replace Qualcomm Stadium with a new stadium in the next few years. They’ve explored several options for redeveloping the site and have shown off renderings of what their proposed $400 million venue would look like. In the meantime, Qualcomm Stadium appears to be serving their purposes. If you want to see this landmark stadium before it disappears forever, visit Gotickets.
