A Green Bay Packers ticket is a passport to another time. The team’s home, Lambeau Field, brims with tradition, more so than any stadium in the National Football League. That’s because Lambeau is the oldest continually occupied stadium in the league and the third-oldest active home field in American pro sports, trailing only Fenway Park and Wrigley Field. Built for only $960,000 in the mid-1950s, the Packers’ home field was originally called City Stadium. At the time of its dedication, its capacity was only 32,500. Its name was changed in 1965 after the death of team co-founder Curley Lambeau. Two years later, on Dec. 31, 1967, the Packers defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 21-17, in the third and final NFL championship game to be held in Green Bay. The game was played in bitter cold with the wind chill dipping to -46 degrees. The Packers’ victory in the “Ice Bowl” earned them a ticket to Super Bowl II - they defeated Oakland, 33-14 - and is regarded as one of the great games in NFL history.
This year’s Packers are aiming for another Super Bowl appearance in what could be star quarterback Brett Favre’s final season. Favre enjoyed one of the best years of his career in 2004, passing for 4,088 yards and 30 touchdowns. But the defense was soft, and Green Bay fell to Minnesota in a first-round playoff game. Hopes for a return to greatness rest with the defense, which was fortified with the addition of safeties Todd Franz, Arturo Freeman and Earl Little and linebacker Raynoch Thompson. Set to visit Green Bay in 2005 are Pittsburgh (Nov. 6), Minnesota (Nov. 21) and Seattle (Jan. 1) among others.
