CITIZENS BANK PARK: Philadelphia Phillies

The NL East boasts some of the newest ballparks of any division in baseball. The Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park can certainly be categorized as such.

The Phillies ballpark is commonly referred to as “The Bank” or “C.B.P” by locals. With a construction cost just north of $450 million and a capacity of just under 44,000 Citizens Bank Park was certainly a site for sore eyes when construction was completed in 2004. The Bank replaced Veterans Stadium an admittedly hideous multipurpose facility that was far overdue for demolition.

If you’ve never visited Citizens Bank Park you’ll definitely want to check out Ashburn Alley located behind center field. Named for Phils legend Richie Ashburn, the Alley features restaurants, games, and plenty of Phillies memorabilia. You’ll find a great selection of restaurants in Ashburn Alley including Bull’s BBQ, Seasons Pizza, Planet Hoagie, and much more. In case you haven’t figured it out, it’ll be difficult to go hungry at a Phillies game.

The Phillies were able to capture a World Series crown in ‘08, their first since 1980. The last couple seasons haven’t been quite as kind to the Fightin’ Phils. A slew of injuries to core players and some interesting moves at the trade deadline have cost the team the chance to contend for another pennant. But make no mistake about it, Philadelphia is still one of the most passionate sports towns in the country. Whether its the Phillies, Sixers, or Flyers, fans by the thousand show up for any of the city’s professional sporting events. If you need more proof just take a look at the attendance for the Phillies last season, they led all Major League teams, drawing an average of over 44,000 fans per game.

Capacity: 43,647

Year Built: 2004

‘12 attendance: 44,021 per game; 3,565,718 total

Dimensions: 329 to left, 374 to left-center, 401 to center, 369 to right-center, 330 to right

Thrill of victory: Oct. 29, 2008: Game 5 of the ‘08 Fall Classic was suspended to due inclimate weather on the 27th. The game was restarted on Oct. 29th and the Phillies held off the Rays by a score of 4-3 to capture their first World Series title since 1980.

Agony of defeat: Oct. 23, 2010: The San Francisco Giants defeated the Phillies in Game 6 of the NLCS by a final score of 3-2 in front of just over 46,000 screaming fans. The Giants would go on to defeat the Texas Rangers in 5 Games in the World Series.

Phillies Ticket Tips: Since the Phillies won the world Series in 2008, Citizens Bank Park has been sold out for the last 3 years. They have dominated attendance in Major League Baseball and show no signs of slowing down.
