The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, built in the early 1900s, covers an entire city block and seats 7,000. The Beaux-Arts structure offers a variety of concerts and other special events. Some of the notable performers in the past include Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead, Elvis Presley, Keith Richards, Prince, Celine Dion, Journey, Beck and Bob Dylan. The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium also hosted the 1920 Democratic National Convention, which nominated James M. Cox. Since you’ve probably never heard of him, it’s safe to assume he lost. And he did - to Warren G. Harding, although Cox’s running mate, Franklin D. Roosevelt, would go on to become President.
