Katy Perry was born Katheryn Hudson in 1984. She is the middle child of two pastors and grew up listening to gospel and singing in the choir. Katy was raised in Santa Barbara, California. The young Katy Hudson graduated from high school in 2003 and moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career. She was signed by Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp’s Red Hill Records, and under the name Katy Hudson, she released a Christian gospel album in 2001 titled Katy Hudson.

Hudson adopted the stage name Perry because the name Kate Hudson was already a know celebrity. Perry is her mother’s maiden name. Katy loves Queen, Alanis Morissette, Heart, Joni Mitchell, Cher, Cyndi Lauper, and Joan Jett. They have been some of her biggest musical influences.

In 2004 she worked with record production team The Matrix, who have worked with artists Avril Lavigne, Liz Phair, Korn, and Britney Spears. That same year, Blender magazine stated that Perry was the next big thing. She had been working with Glen Ballard on an album. Three of those songs were released on her MySpace page. One of the songs, “Simple” was in the 2005 soundtrack for the film Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

Katy signed with Capital Records in 2007. After signing to Capitol Records, Perry began recording for her official mainstream debut album, released in 2008. The full-length album titled One of the Boys was released in the USA on June 17, 2008. Katy was an act in the 2008 Vans Warped Tour to promote the album. The album was preceded by a digital EP in late 2007, entitled “Ur So Gay”, produced by and co-written with Greg Wells. A video for the song premiered in early 2008, and brought Perry to the attention of Madonna, who mentioned her on KISS FM and KRQ’s John Jay & Rich morning show in Arizona, stating that “Ur So Gay” was her “favorite song right now,” as well as another mention on Ryan Seacrest’s Morning Show. On April 29, 2008, her first official single from One of the Boys, “I Kissed a Girl”, debuted on the iTunes Store. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #76, climbing to #1 as of June 25, 2008. It has peaked on iTunes Top 100 at #1, as of June 3, 2008. The music video for “I Kissed a Girl” was released on May 21, 2008 on MySpace. In addition, she has had songs from the album featured on MTV’s series The Hills (“Self Inflicted”, “Waking Up in Vegas” and “Thinking of You”), on Oxygen Network’s reality series Fight Girls, and on the 2008 film Baby Mama (“Fingerprints”).

She attributes her success to Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen, who have made her style of music quite popular. Perry’s videos are regulars on MTV and VH1, and she recently sang Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” at the MTV VMA awards. She was also nominated for five VMAs and has received nomination for MTV awards in Europe and South America.
