Until the early 90s, Madonna was the reigning queen of pop and all things bad, then a teenage blonde sensation hit the scene named Britney Spears, and no one has touched her popularity in over 10 years. Britney Spears was born in December of 1981, to then unknown Lynne and Jamie Spears. Raised in Kentwood, Louisiana, Britney soon found her way into the offices of the music moguls.

Her national TV début was on Starsearch in 1992 at the age of 11, and she wowed the crowd with her soulful and powerful vocals. In 1993 she found her way to Florida and to the set of the New Mickey Mouse Club. Her famous co-stars included Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, and JC Chavez. Britney signed her first recording contract with Jive Records and released “Baby One More Time” in 1999. She became an immediate pop icon in her pigtails and sexy school uniform. The world was comfortable with pop icon, but many were not comfortable with the immediate sex-symbol status gained.

Baby One More Time went to number one and in January of 1999, her first album was release and début at number one. At seventeen she was a superstar and nominated for a Grammy as Best New Artist, which she lost to Christina Aguilera. The Billboard awards in December of 1999 were a different story and she took home four awards. At the AMAs, she won favorite pop/rock new artist. The album Oops I Did it Again was released in 2000 at number one, and at the MTV Music Video awards, Britney cemented her status as America’s newest and hottest sex symbol by wearing a studded nude body suit.

Her third album, Britney, was released in 2001 and début at number one on the Billboard charts. While the album was number one, her highest single “I’m a Slave 4 U” peaked at number 27. She was a cash machine and sold out arenas everywhere. No longer the opening act for N’Sync or the Backstreet Boys, Britney was headlining her own shows. Forbes Magazine ranked her as the most powerful celebrity of 2002. That same year she appeared on stage with Madonna and Christina Aguilera to perform “Like a Virgin.” Again she stunned audiences by giving Madonna more than the staged kiss.

In the Zone, her fourth album, was released in 2003 also debuting on the Billboard charts at number one. Britney was nominated again for a Grammy in the category of Best Dance Recording for the single “Toxic.” She released two compilation albums from 2004-2005. While the world watched her go through family and personal problems Britney tried to keep her career on track. Her fans have stayed loyal and her album Blackout debuted at number two on the Billboard charts. While it was her first album not to be released at number one, the single “Gimme More” peaked at number three.

2008 was a good year in the industry for Britney. At the MTV Video Awards she won Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, and the coveted Video of the Year for “Pieces of Me,” her response to the paparazzi. September 26, 2008, her single “Womanizer” was released and is the first single from the album Circus, which is due for release on Britney’s birthday in December of 2009. Will it be another number one? Currently she is the only female star to ever have four albums debut at number one. Could she be the only one to have five?
