St. Louis
Have you ever wanted to take a trip out west and didn’t know where to start? Try the “Gate way to the West,” St. Louis. This city is located on the state line of Missouri and Illinois. Missouri being the 18th most populated state in the country. It received its statehood on August 10, 1821. The origin of its name comes from the Missouri River, one named by the Missouri Indians. St. Louis being one of its largest cities followed by Kansas City, Springfield, Independence, and Columbia. The list goes on and on of the famous people who have come from St. Louis, such as Josephine Baker (actress, singer, dancer), Yogi Berra (Major League Baseball Player), Linda Blair (The Exorcist), and T-Bone Burnett (Rock and Country singer, composer, and producer).
Your first stop should be the St. Louis Zoo located on 1 Government Drive. It is the 3rd largest zoo in the country, with 90 acres of space and over 700 species of animals on exhibit. This is a must see for any family on vacation in St. Louis. The zoo is open year round and has free general admission. Some areas do require a small fee like the children’s zoo where you can pet the animals and the feeding area for bears and sea lions. All in all this is a must see for anyone on vacation.
The next attraction on your list should be the Gateway Arch, which is located on 707 North First Street downtown St. Louis. The Arch was completed in Oct. 1965. Designed to last 1000 years, it reaches 630 feet in height; on a clear day you can see for about 30 miles from atop the structure. Groups of 20 or more can have a guided tour of the landmark which includes the documentary film on the building of the Arch, a visit to the Museum of Westward Expansion, and a trip to the old courthouse which is famous for holding the Dred Scott Trial.
Finally on your trip to St. Louis you should try the City Museum. Located at 701 North 15th Street, downtown St. Louis, the City Museum is in what use to be a former shoe manufacturing building. This museum will satisfy both the young and young at heart visitors. There are three floors of interesting, educational and fun filled rooms. The museum is run by a group of artists and professionals with impressive credits, who together produce an awesome array of exhibits. Get lost in the midlevel enchanted forest, explore the giant aquarium, or join in on the circus fun, do some crafts or just enjoy looking around.
