As the only federal district in the United States of America, the District of Columbia is home to the American capital city, Washington. As the seat of the American federal government, Washington, D.C., is also home to the White House, the Supreme Court and the United States Congress. Situated along the Potomac River, the land of Washington, D.C., was originally donated by the neighboring states of Maryland and Virginia. In addition to the country’s three branches of government, Washington, D.C., is also home to embassies from around the world as well as a number of important headquarters, like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
